Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
