Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
