In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
