The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
